After reaching an agreement in principle in July last year, Japan and the European Union have finalised the negotiations for the Economic Partnership Agreement back in December.
The two parties are also accelerating negotiations for a Strategic Partnership Agreement, that will further consolidate the relationship between the two economies that account for a quarter of the world's GDP.
Despite being the EU’s seventh biggest trading partner, Japan has always been deemed as one of the most challenging markets to break into, due to increased local competition and restrictive regulations. EU Gateway | Business Avenues is an initiative that helps European companies overcome these barriers and penetrate the Japanese market through market-scoping missions in a wide array of sectors, including Environment & Water Technologies, Green Energy Technologies, Construction & Building Technologies, Healthcare & Medical Technologies, and Railway Technologies & Services.
It thus promotes trade and investments between Europe and Japan and helps bring European businesses to an ever-changing, quality-focused market.
A total of twelve EU-funded market-scoping missions are to take place until 2019.
The participants benefitted from industry-specific expert advice and market insights before the event, learned how to navigate public procurement, and had countless opportunities to sound out the market and meet new potential business partners.
In 2018, more upcoming missions to Japan will target pioneering companies in Healthcare & Medical Technologies (closed for applications), Environment & Water Technologies (applications close 2 February), Green Energy Technologies (applications close 2 March), and Construction & Building Technologies (applications close 27 July).
Companies in these fields are invited to apply and receive coaching, logistical and financial support through the EU-backed programme.
